Marble Entryway — Beachfront Condo
About This Project
This entryway floor replacement was completed in a beachfront condo unit in Alamitos Beach, on one of the upper floors of a 1970s concrete-frame building. The original flooring had been removed, leaving the slab exposed and in need of leveling before any new tile could go down. We ground down a high spot near the entry threshold and applied a self-leveling underlayment to bring the slab within the 1/8" tolerance required for large-format tile over a 10-foot span.
The tile selected was a 24"x24" white marble-look porcelain with a polished finish. Because of its size and the condo's coastal exposure, we used a large-and-heavy tile mortar applied with a 1/2" square-notched trowel and back-buttered each piece to achieve full coverage. The grout joints were set at 1/16" using rectified tile clips and leveling wedges to prevent lippage across the continuous field. All cement grout received two coats of penetrating silicone sealer appropriate for the marine environment.
