Calacatta Bathroom Remodel

Double-sink vanity with gold faucets and oval mirrors against large Calacatta marble wall tiles in Alamitos Beach bathroom

About This Project

This was a full bathroom tile remodel in an Alamitos Beach condo with ocean views — the kind of space where the materials need to hold up to daily moisture while looking like they belong in the setting. The scope covered the full vanity wall from countertop to ceiling with large-format Calacatta marble porcelain tile, including the area behind the double-sink vanity and between the two oval mirrors. The tile was set in a continuous stack pattern with 1/16" joints to emphasize the slab-like appearance of the veined surface.

The vanity wall substrate was cement board fastened to the existing framing. Because this was a vanity wall rather than a direct wet area, we used a standard white polymer-modified thinset rather than epoxy, but still applied a liquid waterproofing membrane at the base course where splash exposure is highest. The Calacatta porcelain tiles were rectified and book-matched at the center seam to align the vein pattern across the two tiles flanking each mirror — a layout decision that required dry-fitting and marking each tile before setting began.
