Freestanding Tub Feature Wall
About This Project
The feature wall behind a freestanding tub is one of the highest-visibility tile installations in a master bathroom — it's the backdrop for the entire room. This project in an Alamitos Beach condo involved tiling a full-height wall with large-format white Carrara marble porcelain, floor to ceiling, centered on the tub placement. The layout was planned so that the grout joints on the wall aligned vertically and horizontally throughout, with equal cut tiles at the ceiling and floor to create a symmetrical, intentional look.
The wall was framed with cement board, and because the freestanding tub sits directly in front of the wall with chrome claw feet on the floor tile, we tiled the wall first and then coordinated the floor tile layout to meet the base of the wall cleanly. The Carrara porcelain tiles were 24"x48" — a format that required a suction cup lifter for wall installation and full back-buttering to prevent hollow spots behind such large pieces.
