Herringbone Kitchen Backsplash
About This Project
This kitchen backsplash installation was part of a larger kitchen renovation in an Alamitos Beach condo. The homeowner selected a cream glazed 3"x6" subway tile in a 45-degree herringbone pattern — a choice that adds visual interest to the backsplash without competing with the open wood shelving and neutral cabinet color. The herringbone pattern required a more detailed layout plan than a standard running bond, because the 45-degree orientation means the pattern must be set from a center point and worked outward symmetrically to avoid skewed cuts at the edges.
We established the layout center on the range wall, set a 45-degree reference line, and dry-fit the first several courses before mixing any thinset. The tiles were cut with a wet saw at all perimeter angles — herringbone cuts at 45 degrees can't be done cleanly with a snap cutter. The countertop-to-backsplash joint received a bead of cream silicone caulk rather than grout to allow for the slight movement between the quartz countertop and the wall.
